The Poltergeist Franchise: Hollywood's Most Famous "Curse"
Perhaps no franchise is more synonymous with the word "cursed" than Poltergeist (1982). Over the course of the trilogy, four cast members died in a relatively short span of time.

The Real-Life Tragedies

• Dominique Dunne (Dana Freeling): Tragically murdered by her ex-boyfriend just months after the first film's release.
• Heather O’Rourke (Carol Anne): The face of the franchise, who tragically passed away at just 12 years old from septic shock due to a misdiagnosed bowel obstruction before Poltergeist III was released.
• Julian Beck and Will Sampson: Both passed away from pre-existing medical conditions (stomach cancer and kidney failure, respectively) shortly after filming their roles.

The "Why" Behind the Rumor

The legend claims the curse was triggered because the production used real human skeletons as props in the iconic muddy swimming pool scene, allegedly to save money on cheap plastic replicas. Cast members later confirmed they didn't know the skeletons were real until after the scene was shot.

The Exorcist: Spontaneous Combustion and Exorcisms
The 1973 horror masterpiece The Exorcist was plagued by so many bizarre setbacks that director William Friedkin actually brought in a real priest to bless the set and comfort the terrified crew.

The Incidents

• The Studio Fire: The entire MacNeil house set mysteriously burned to the ground in the middle of the night. The only room left completely untouched by the flames? Regan’s bedroom—the room where the exorcism takes place. Production was delayed by six weeks.
• The Injuries: Ellen Burstyn (Regan's mother) suffered a permanent spinal injury when a harness malfunctioned during a scene where she is thrown by the demon. Linda Blair also suffered a back injury from a rigging failure.
• The Deaths: Actors Jack MacGowran and Vasiliki Maliaros both died while the film was in post-production. Shockingly, their characters also died in the movie.

The Crow: When Negligence Looks Like Fate
The 1993 production of The Crow is a heartbreaking example of how industry corner-cutting can create a dark legacy. The film is permanently clouded by the tragic death of its lead actor, Brandon Lee (son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee).

The Incidents
During a routine filming sequence, Brandon Lee was fatally shot on camera. The prop department, rushing to save time and money, had manufactured their own dummy cartridges. They accidentally left a live bullet tip lodged inside the barrel of the gun. When a blank cartridge was later fired, it acted like a real bullet, striking Lee.

The "Why" Behind the Rumor

Because Bruce Lee had also died young and unexpectedly under mysterious circumstances decades prior, the public instantly spun a web of "family curses." In reality, OSHA investigations revealed severe negligence, extreme crew fatigue, and a total lack of weapon safety protocols on set.

Why do we look at these events and blame ghosts instead of bad luck? Psychologists call it the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy.
When thousands of movies are filmed every single year, random statistics dictate that a few of them will experience a high concentration of terrible luck.
